Paul ReddickReddick Redux

Toronto blues bard Paul Reddick (left) has assembled his finest tracks onto one album called “Revue”. See the review of “Revue” here.

Fado Blues

Fado is the blues of Portugal. In Toronto, the tradition is carried on by remarkable young performers. "Fado Blues" is a co-presentation of the Toronto Blues Society and the inaugural Luminato Festival and will take place Thursday, June 7 at 9:30 PM at the Baillie Theatre in the historic Distillery District. It will feature the remarkable new fado voice Catarina Cardeal. Teaming up with her musical partner Mike Siracusa in the project "15", this refreshing "Fado Blues" fusion pushes the definition to new heights. Discover the singer CBC Radio's Andy Barrie calls "mesmerizing".

Fado is the urban folk music of Portugal's capital and it is one of Toronto's hidden gems of musical expression, shining out of the limelight in the robust yet almost invisible Portuguese community. Fado, the passionate vocal tradition born out of Lisbon's tiny working class taverns captures the mournful longing, sung often about the wait of returning sailing ships. This melancholy, often called "saudade" reflects home-sickness or pain, and gives the singer a license to push the emotions to the brink. The late diva Amália Rodrigues took fado to the international stage with her career, setting the benchmark, and encouraging a new generation to carry on.

In Toronto, the tradition is carried on by remarkable young performers such as Cristina Taborda, Sonia Tavares and Paulo Filipe. Innovator Tony Gouveia, leader of folk rock combo Tabú, explores his own version of fado tradition as part of the concert series.

An essential ingredient to fado singing performances is the combination of Portuguese guitar with classical (steel string) guitar.

Fado Toronto will also feature established favourites such as Fátima Ferreira, Humberto Silva, Maria Haidé and Tony Câmara.Fátima and Humberto's concert will feature Gabriel Teves playing Portuguese guitar with Januário Araújo. Fado champion and organizer Nuno Cristo will support all other concerts on Portuguese guitar and with his Anima Fado ensemble of Larry Lewis (classical guitar) and Pedro Joel (double bass).

Adding context and further meaning to this first time ever series, Fado Toronto, are actors Aida Jordão and Helder Ramos who will read from the poet Camões and other works. Here's the full schedule. More at www.luminato.com
