Mr. Rick Talks
Mr. Rick of Mr. Rick and The Biscuits hosts the 20th Annual Toronto Blues Society Guitar Workshop with guests Donna Lynn Kay, Jon Knight, Brian Cober and Jack de Keyzer. It's an afternoon event, Sunday, February 26 at 2pm at Healey's.
Excerpts from an interview with Mr. Rick and Claxton Lonsdale, Submitted to The Toronto Blues Society.
Hey Rick, you are the host for the TBS guitar workshop this year and you seem to be doing a lot of performance work around Toronto lately. What's up?
Well we had a great new CD release at Hughs room this past summer, it was standing room only, our CD "Cocktails and Cornbread" got lots of airplay from CBC, College radio, and the Roots and blues programs across Canada. Thank you Jennifer Claveau!! After that we were doing our usual club rotations at places like the Gate 403, add to that a scad of festival work, special event concerts,Thank you Richard Flohil. Early in Feb. We have several appearances at Winterfolk here in Toronto, yes I'm quite busy. I got asked to host the yearly TBS guitar work shop which I feel really honored to do. The guests so far are, Jack de Keyzer, Donna Lynn Kay, Brian Cober and Jon Knight. This should be a great show/workshop because of the quality and variety of the players.
How would you describe your guitar playing style?
It's really old time fingerstyle, I get my playing from blending the styles of Bill Broonzy, Merle Travis, Memphis Minnie, Doc Watson and others.
Where are you from originally? Are you Canadian?
I became a Canadian citizen a couple of years ago. I came here from the States in 1972.
When and how did you get into Roots and Blues music?
I had a little transistor radio that I listened to at night, I would surf the stations and listen to American music in all it's shapes and forms. In Detroit where I grew up, the population was made up largely of rural people drawn to the jobs in the post-war auto industry. The late night radio programming reflected this fact. I could listen to Howlin Wolf one minute and the next would be some hillbilly swing!! Then around 1966 me and some friends started hanging around a coffee House called "the Chessmate". I would see every major folk and Blues act known at the time. Muddy, Wolf, Butterfield, Hooker, James Cotton, Gary Davis, Martin, Bogen and Armstrong, the Kweskin Jug Band, Dave van Ronk, Chuck and Joni Mitchell!! etc. etc. I wanted to play guitar like Rev. Gary Davis and Dave Van Ronk. I guess this is where it all started. Me and my friends started a blues band and began playing art gallery and coffee house type gigs for the Beatnik crowd. Fast forward a bit, by 1969 we were in California playing Sunset strip clubs. We even had a manager and recording contract for about 15 minutes.
Your current music project is called "Mr. Rick and The Biscuits", How would you describe your sound and music style ?
We struggle with this question in Toronto all the time. I think in Toronto a lot of people need a tight definition of what style you play in and what is the name of it ?! In the States or in the Maritimes people get it right away. We've come up with a few descriptions that work. First of all we mostly fall into a folk type of category. I like to call our sound "Skillet Fried Roots music" What I also call it is "acoustic string band Americana". Richard Flohil calls us "Skiffle". If there was a cook's recipe for us, it might read like this, one part Bill Broonzy, one part Louis Jordan, one part Merle Travis, another part Bob Wills sprinkle in some Carter Family, Bill Monroe, Nick Lucas, Tiny Tim, Fats Waller, cook with lots of grease at high heat!!!
