June 4 & 5, 2004

The shows begin at 8pm sharp so come early to get a good seat. Tickets are $6 for members and $7 for non members.

We are proud to announce as our finalists:

Julian Fauth – Friday 8:00
An accomplished piano player and guitarist, Julian Fauth has been playing the blues since he was quite young. Nowadays, he plays regularly around Toronto, often with such fine musicians as David Rotundo, Madagascar Slim, Bob Mover, Paul Reddick and many more. Julian has toured through Russia, Germany, and Cuba, and in 2002 released his debut CD, The World You Live In. Julian describes his style as, “primitive, old-time barrelhouse piano with occasional flights of insanity.”

Doc MacLean – Friday 9:00

Doc MacLean came of age playing with some of the Delta’s most celebrated songsters, including Peg Leg Sam the Medicine Show Man, Blind John Davis, Sunnyland Slim, Little Brother Montgomery, Rev Pearly Brown, Colin Linden, Mose Scarlett, the Carter Family, and Sam Chatmon. Now, marking 30 years on the blues highway, his work as a songwriter reflects his family roots in the labor movement, his time spent living and performing in the rural southern United States, and his personal connections to the oral and musical history of the Delta. Doc is currently finishing a CD with Nashville producer Colin Linden.

Tommy Fyfe – Friday 10:00
Sudbury’s own Tommy Fyfe began his musical career in the mid-eighties after a long and successful run as a gymnastics coach. An accomplished multi-instrumentalist, Tommy has opened for a number of large blues acts, including Joe Louis Walker, the Downchild Blues Band, Maurice John Vaughn, Dutch Mason and Jack de Keyzer. Tommy recently completed recording an album of original material with his band, the Whiskey River Blues Band, entitled Dr Tom’s Blues Tonic. The album was recorded in Detroit by Royce Nunley.

Dale Boyle and the Barburners – Saturday 8:00

Originally from Gaspe, Quebec, now based in Montreal, Dale Boyle and the Barburners are adamant in expressing their own take on the blues. Pulling from their roots in country, rock, rockabilly and blues music, the band’s influences, like their sound, are diverse. Yet, it is unquestionably the blues that provides the common thread that connects and fuses their music into one sound. The band’s latest recording effort, a full-length CD of original material entitled A Dog Day for the Purists, reflects the bands’ desire to expand upon, and reinterpret the blues. Their sound is not for the blues purists. The Dale Boyle and the Barburners’ sound are for those who want to keep the blues alive and are willing to embrace different interpretations of it.

Bharath & the Catfish – Saturday 9:00

The Catfish, a traditional blues project, have been playing as raw and as honest as it gets since 1996. Along with vocalist/harmonicist Bharath Rajakumar, the Catfish are, Andrew Cowan, Costa Zafiropolous and Ben Cassie. Based in Montreal, Bharath and the Catfish have played shows ranging from tiny juke joints to the Montreal Jazz Festival (’01, ’02.) The are currently working on a self produced CD Talk to me baby, which will feature a number of the top blues players in Montreal.

Daddy Long Legs – Saturday 10:00

Daddy Long Legs combines the harmonica of powerhouse Chris "Junior" Malleck and the vintage guitar tones of 'Shakey' Mike Elliott. Driven by the solid foundation of Jeff Wagner on Drums and Steve Toms on Bass, Daddy Long Legs is carving out their own spot in the Canadian blues landscape. Not only can they play the blues the way they were meant to be played, but they are helping to preserve the blues by adding their own songs, sounds, and attitudes.

This year the selection committee had to choose from nearly 30 entries, submitted from as far away as Vancouver.
